On this day, 124 years ago, my third great grandmother Sarah Hughes, nee Hickey, passed away. I received a tonne of information on this side of the family only two days ago, and whilst verifying this info I noticed how close the date was.
Born in Queens County (known today as Laois County) in Ireland in 1849, Sarah married John Hughes in 1870 in Greymouth, New Zealand. I’ve yet to locate her immigration records to New Zealand. But I have located an image of her headstone:
Sarah was buried in Karoro Cemetery in Greymouth, New Zealand. And from the looks, her husband, two of her children and two of her grandchildren were later laid to rest there also. How hard it must have been for her husband John, left with eight children aged between 22 and 7 years of age.
“Gone, but not forgotten”.
How those words ring true, even 124 years on. Her descendants may not have had the chance to meet her, but in researching her and her family, we are keeping her memory and legacy alive. We are hers, and she is ours.
